Research proves that New Years Eve is infamously the one evening of the year that induces the most socially-based panic attacks (disclaimer: claim subject to research). Most of us experience a similar, albeit fortunately smaller, freak-out round about mid-week. It’s a mighty battle between the forces of happiness and the forces of efficiency, prompted by the evil that is the working week. You slave away all week. It’s only natural for you to wish the upcoming weekend to be the best Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday of your life. And yet you expect all this to happen as if by magic; you don’t have an adequate amount of time to ensure the evening and two days of bliss soon to arrive even come close to being the best of your life due to the very reason that you are slaving away. Sure M&S’s ‘dine in for 2 for £10’ campaign might make the prospect of eating in on a Saturday night more tempting than it should, and your local pub is all cosy and familiar, but fortunately Twenty Something London are on Team Happiness. You might not have time to find out what’s all well and good in London at the weekend, but TSL does. That’s kind of their thing, and they’re rather good at it.
Sure there are other recommendation websites, but TSL is the one which follows the motto of ‘Do Something Different’. Everybody’s had dinner and then gone on to the theatre. Everybody’s done London’s ‘Top 10 Attractions’. Would you rather be a tourist or would you rather Do Something Different? With recommendations and features as fresh as them (a year in the making, TSL’s only been live for five months), the team have much to offer. With categories ranging from ‘Arty stuff’ to ‘Party time’, and Music, Comedy, Theatre, even Karaoke, and a whole host of others in between, you can consider TSL your new digital friend who’s as cultural as they are well informed. And with My TSL (where you can save recommendations which especially take your fancy onto a map and calendar) and a regular newsletter, all offered in exchange for a mere e-mail address, you can consider them to be a generous friend, too.
Although supporting independent businesses and helping you ‘Do Something Different’ is high on TSL’s already busy agenda, they also somehow find time to help the creative world on its way (take their Sunday Music Mix series which we’ve been regularly contributing to, for example), they also somehow find time to help you Know More. As if all that you can get from their website, Facebook and Twitterwasn’t keeping you busy as it is, Twenty Something London have even turned to entertaining you themselves. Should you be regularly stuck for things to do or, even worse/better (depending on the way you look at it), be stuck for things to do this very weekend, then TSL’s indoor festival, Know More, from 12pm ‘til 11pm this Sunday 10th February at Kings Cross’s Drink Shop & Do, is a must. With an aim to ‘demonstrate London’s creative talent’, there’ll be silent art auctions, live acts, guest DJs, street food, free drinks tastings and poetry. What’s good is that we’ll be there. What’s better is that all of this will cost you just £10 if you book in advance (£15 on the door). And, as if all of this wasn’t enough to convince you, the first 150 people through the doors receive goodie bags! And, just as that oh-so-sultry voice from the M&S adverts would say, these aren’t just normal goodie bags; featuring contributions from Fourth & Main, Jameson Whiskey, Saatchi Gallery Magazine Art & Music, Propercorn, VitaCoco and Young & Lost Records, these are Twenty Something London goodie bags. See. You. There.
Being one of the two co-creators of Twenty Something London (a recommendations website with anentire category devoted to music), as well as a few months in Paris before TSL came about where being a fashion journalist by night and cleaning toilets at a bistro by day was her daily routine for inspiration (maybe not), Pascale Barget was bound to come up with an interesting dream Sofar. And she didn’t disappoint.
Pascale of Twenty Something London’s #DreamSofar would be:
‘To see Sia play a Sofar gig would be a favourite for the memory book. Since I was 15, her song Breathe Me has been my go-to whenever I want to escape. Some people find it depressing but it's one of few tunes I can play over and over again, always in anticipation for the last minute when the song’s layers explode into a psychedelic experience. Her voice is so textured and soothing, particularly on my favouite record Colour The Small One, and her live performances are coupled with such stage presence.’
‘I’ve been in love with Beach House for the past couple years. When it comes playing one of my favourite albums, Devotion, I subconsciously know the order to every tune and could hum the intro to anyone that asks. What I love most is their unique sound - when a Beach House song plays, I'll instantly recognise it. Although I've never seen them live, I have had the insane yet good-hearted jealousy when a very close friend who hardly knew who they were got taken to their sold out London show last Summer. Another chill-out session.’
‘Being introduced to Efterklang was one of those nice surprises that fortunately last. After asking the guy in the record shop for something different, he casually handed over Efterklang’s third album Magic Chairs - something for which I am forever grateful. I like to think of these Copenhagen creatives as musical scientists; always experimenting with different arrangements and coming up with something enchanting. For their latest album, Piramida, they went to a deserted island and collected thousands of different sounds. Back in the studio, they pieced them together to make one of my favourite albums of the year. In Dreams Today, Casper’s footsteps along a deserted pier and the chiming of glass bottles make for the whimsical air.’
‘This band knows how to mix things up and I thank them very much for doing so. Taking traditional Yiddish influences, and combining it with electro and lead singer Bridget’s powerful yet soothing voice, produce a highly unusual sound which works very well.’
‘For a Dream Sofar you can pick anyone, right? Even world-renowned super stars? Well, if that’s the case, to hear this woman’s voice in the intimacy of someone’s living room is something I would look forward to for weeks. Not only is she a great singer but she’s also an unforgettable performer who puts her heart into everything she does. This clip performing at the UN for World Humanitarian Day is a particular favourite. It always puts me in a good mood.’
